LLMs TXT The llms.txt file

llms.txt is a courtesy index for tools that choose to read it. It is not a Google ranking file.

Google does not use llms.txt as a ranking signal. Search engines already have your sitemap. Some AI tools may read a short index if you publish one. LLMs TXT makes that file from your real links and leaves sitemap.xml in place.

A realistic expectation

  • Do not expect the file to change Google rankings
  • Do not remove your sitemap
  • Do treat the file as a clean list of the pages you want a reader to open
  • Do check the preview before you share the URL

If a tool ignores the file, your store is unchanged aside from the extra URL. Products, pages and the sitemap keep working as before.
